Dear Leslie,
I think this is a good question. I may be ignorant but I don't know of any
guidelines for interns in private practice settings. I think one things that
is happening is that there are fewer internship opportunities and there are
more folks in private practice now, thanks to licensure laws. I have had
some folks intern with me in private practice. Some were PhD students in a
counseling program and some were DMT alternate route candidates. The PhD
students have university supervisors who meet with then 1-2 times a week and
they must meet guidelines for recording and writing up sessions. Still, I am
reluctant to take PhD interns unless they have previous experience as
practitioners and a skill set.
To intern with me, alternate route candidates have to have their masters
degree in counseling, psych, or SW and be licensed or license eligible in
the state. I begin by integrating them into individual and group sessions
with appropriate existing clients (with the client's permission). I then
look for a good match for an individual client. Usually this is a client who
is (1) an appropriate referral for DMT, (2) may not have adequate funding
but is motivated to participate in DMT, (3) has clearly defined goals, (4)
may need in vitro approaches (at school, in the home). If the intern is
co-leading a group with me, then usually clients who are interested in
working with the intern, or participating in DMT as an adjunct to their
treatment, self-identify. I involve interns in groups first as interns only,
then as co-leaders, then leaders as they become ready to lead them and as
the groups become available. Private practice can present many challenges
when it comes to forming groups. Also, getting the hours for DMT can take a
while in private practice because you just don't have numbers of clients
coming through the door that you would have in a clinic or hospital.
Having a skilled intern has been a huge bonus for me and my clients.
However, I could not have taken a student intern in a masters program in the
private practice setting. There are too many legal and supervisory
considerations, clients are not eager to work with someone who does not have
a professional degree yet, and I simply don't have time to provide oversight
for a beginning practitioner.
I definitely recommend that all interns have their own malpractice insurance
policy and require this from my interns.
