*Huge, deep, soulful, rejuvenating breath*

*Beaming, radiant smile*

Today is my birthday (I am 35 AND FABULOUS!) and I feel so utterly filled
with gratitude from attending the conference this past weekend. What an
amazing birthday gift to have spent the 4 days preceeding my birthday with
such strong, wise, dancing spirits! I cannot help but remember the
information that Stacey Hurst sent out on the listserve after LAST year's
conference about why geese fly together in the flock (see forwarded email
below.) I DO FEEL like I can fly 71% farther...! For that matter I feel
like I can ADVOCATE 71% stronger, like I can PR 71% more passionately, like
I can STAND 71% taller and BREATHE 71% more deeply!

I am particularly grateful for the experience of the movement choir on
Sunday morning and I want to specifically thank each of you who were
present. As I shared with our choreographer, I just received my DTR but I
did it through the alternate route. It was a prolonged journey (I started in
fall of 2000!) and one with multiple hills - some I flew over, some I
trudged over. The alternate route is a lonely one most of the time and I
didn't realize until I prepared to walk through the spiral of "recognition
and honor" how much I needed to feel "seen" - how much I needed a
"graduation" and acknowledgement for my achievement. To be welcomed with
such intention into the fold... it was profound. A sincere, heartfelt,
soulfelt thank you for those of you who shared in that experience.

As for the conference as a whole -kudos to all of you who helped plan and
organize it. Thank you to the presenters - there were so many that I simply
couldn't attend but wanted to - and the ones I did go to were fantastic. I
experienced a significant SHIFT in my personal and professional confidence,
my professional identity, and my interpersonal openness this weekend and it
was all from interacting and moving with my community. Is WHAT WE DO
AMAZING OR WHAT!!!!! :-)

I look forward to reconnecting with all of you again, when our dances
intersect. In the meantime, know that I feel the collective rhythm of our
wings flapping - of our flock flying - and I feel like I can fly to the moon
and beyond.

Joy and peace,
Lora Wilson, MA, DTR
Long Beach, CA

Lessons Learned From Geese

• As each goose flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the birds that
follow.

By flying in a V formation, the flock adds 71% extra flying range.

• People who share a sense of community can help each other

get where they are going more easily....

because they are travelling on the trust of one another.

• When a goose falls out of formation, it feels the drag and

resistance of flying alone. It will quickly move back to take advantage

of the lifting power of the birds in front.

• If we have as much sense as geese, we stay in formation

with others headed in the direction we want to go.

We are willing to accept their help and offer our help in return.

• When the lead goose tires, it drops back within

the formation and another takes the lead position.

• It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks.

We should recognize, respect and protect

each other’s unique arrangement of skills,

capabilities, talents, and resources.

• The geese flying in formation honk

to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.

• We need to make sure our honking is supportive.

In groups where there is encouragement,

production is greatly increased.

Individual empowerment results from quality honking.

• When a goose gets sick,

two geese drop out of the formation and

follow it to help and protect it.

• If we have as much sense as geese,

we will stand by each other in difficult times,

as well as when we are strong.

Hi Lora!

What a beautiful message you have shared with us. Thank you so much. It was
wonderful meeting you. You reached out to us on this listserve before we
even came to CA & I took you up on your offer for assistance. Now that I've
met you I see that your willingness to give is only one aspect of you that I
admire.

Welcome to our fold, congratulations on your DTR and happy birthday.

Also, thanks Elizabeth (Fluck) for initiating the start of discussion around
the conference. I am so glad to hear that your raffle was successful & I
hope that all CA d/mts become active in the efforts of the coalition as they
are essential in building a future for d/mt in CA.

I am also hoping that many people write in with memories, ideas and
thoughts that they'd be willing to share about their experiences at the
conference. Many were unable to be with us, so let's try to make the
conference come alive for them.

In the East Coast regional meeting, one of the requests was to share visions
for our future. Bringing that thought "home", I wonder, Christina, if it's
possible to put the MAGNIFICENT slide show you developed on the Website?

There is so much I'd like to share & will be doing more later, but for now,
just wanted to let everyone know about one presentation I attended that I
hope will become an annual one that includes area administrators &
clinicians ( another vision I have that I hope others share).

For those of you who haven't read about the Andrea Rizzo Foundation, I urge
you to take the time to learn about it & the work that Andrea's mother,
Susan Rizzo Vincent, is carrying on along with a dedicated team of d/mts-
(just google Andrea Rizzo Foundation). It is very special as is the work of
those d/mts involved. They are Suzi Tortora, Jocelyn Shaw, Christina
Devereaux, Sharon Mulcahy, Jean Basiner, and Mary Cartales Ponsini.

Thank you all for sharing your work with us. It touched me deeply.

Lets hear from others re the conference, ok?

Susan Kleinman, MA, ADTR, NCC

Dear Lora and the ADTA community,

A big congratulations to you! I have been going to conferences again in
these last several years because that sense of community is so critical
to what we do and there have been times I really missed it. To all the
wonderful dance/movement therapists, dancers, and educators with whom I
talked with, danced and moved---a big thanks. To those who couldn't be
there- I hope you can feel the connection as well. I am glad for the
list serve as an additional place to discuss with each other and grow.
I like the geese symbolism as well-hopefully we can continue to help,
support, educated and be respectful to each other. I continue to learn
so much from all of you, and are quite excited when we welcome in new
DTRs and ADTRs to the work. Many congratulations Lora on your
accomplishments and sharing!

Best,
Lauri
