Abstract
Reviews the book, An Introduction to Medical Dance/Movement Therapy:
Health Care in Motion by S. Goodill (see record 2006-00566-000). The
ameliorating potential of DMT (dance/movement therapy) and other allied
forms, as demonstrated throughout this text, furnish a distinctive
contribution to that process. The author portrays this role as
supportive;
that is, one that complements standard medical treatment for individuals
"with primary medical illness". Commendably, this book stretches the
standard clinical landscape of DMT to territories commonly traversed by
traditional medical providers. Well-conceived and organized, the book is
divided into three parts, each containing three chapters, each of which
concludes with a paragraph or two to underscore its primary thrust. The
book progresses from Overview (Part I), to applications of DMT in
hospitals and clinics. (Part II), to research and education for both
student and clinician (Part III). The substantive content of this
important book amply fills a void in the DMT literature in a domain of
treatment now gaining recognition. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006

Abstract
Twenty depressed, community-dwelling older adults (average age = 69)
completed a pilot study of ballroom dance lessons as a treatment for
geriatric depression. Participants were randomly assigned to either an
immediate or delayed treatment condition. All participants received eight
ballroom dance lessons from a selection of six dances (foxtrot, waltz,
rumba, swing, cha-cha, and tango) from the National Dance Council of
America's syllabus. Effect sizes were in the medium range for the HRSD (d
= .51) and GDS (d = .40), and in the small range for the SCL-90R (d =
.17). There was some support for self-efficacy and hopelessness as
outcome
predictors. Participant feedback indicated the dance lessons were
enjoyable and well-received. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all
