Abstract
Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books,
1958, Vol 3(4), 102-103. Reviews the book, Dance in Psychotherapy by
Elizabeth Rosen (see record 1957-06197-000). This book has two stated
objectives. The first is to explore the value of the dance as a
therapeutic adjunct in the treatment of psychotic patients. The second is
to make available a collection of behavioral observations on patients as
they participate in a dance program, with an account of the actual
methods
and materials used in the sessions. Sadly in its exploration of the
therapeutic potentialities of creative dance groups, the choreography of
this study is disappointingly uncreative. Nevertheless the deficiencies
of
this study as a book and as research do not prevent its reinforcing the
clinical impression that the dance has therapeutic value as a nonverbal
approach to certain regressed patients. (PsycINFO Database Record (c)

Abstract
Examined the ability to mirror emotions by having 32 21-44 yr old dance
therapy graduate students and 8 23-30 yr old social work graduate
students
duplicate a videotape (the Movement-Mirroring Test) of a person
expressing
sadness, anger, and happiness. The ability to mirror was then compared to
imaginative, expressive, and observational skills. Movement mirroring was
found to correlate positively with, and was predictive of, observational
skills. Mirroring was not related to expressivity, and the relationship
between mirror and imagination was unclear. Dance therapy Ss performed
significantly better than social work Ss in the Movement-Mirroring Test,
but training did not improve their scores. Results show that the
Movement-Mirroring Test differentiated between social work and dance
therapy students and that it correlated with and was predictive of
observational ability. The instrument appears to be valid for measuring
an
important skill in dance therapy. (20 ref) (PsycINFO Database Record (c)

Abstract
Presents a review of the origins, mechanisms, and applications of a
dancing, nonverbal group therapy, "terpsichoretrancetherapy." The states
of emotion and consciousness produced by the therapy are similar to those
seen during Brazilian soccer matches, Carnival days, and Afro-Brazilian
seances. The therapy process as practiced by the author in weekly
sessions
is described; it uses an orchestra, hyperventilation, and instructions to
induce a kinetic trance. Effects on patients are outlined. Application is
recommended for alleviation of mass neurotic conditions, and
contraindications are presented. (French summary) (PsycINFO Database
