Hello everyone,

I was recently offered the opportunity to do dmt work with clergy and am presenting this to the dmt community to learn 1) if anyone else has worked with this population and 2) what ideas others might have about approaching work with this population.

The setting is an institute which primarily serves priests and nuns, but also laypersons who are interested in addressing their spiritual lives and concerns in therapeutic work. They have two separate inpatient programs (6 mos each) for men and women. Although the institute is affiliated with the Catholic church, many of the staff work from a psychodynamic orientation and many alternative treatments are also offered including art therapy, psychodrama, and physical therapy/exercise (including pilates and feldenkrais). The staff feel the patients would benefit greatly from dmt work. They have spoken to me about how disconnected these patients are from their bodies and the observable rigidity that characterizes their thinking and physicality. I have been told they generally tend to use their spirituality as a defense and are chronic intellectualizers. Although this is an inpatient program, none of the patients are a danger to self or others, nor do they have
such severe mental illness that they require ongoing supervision. They do, however, struggle with a number of issues including addiction (both substance and sexual in nature), abuse histories, personality disorders, mood disorders etc...

I am currently putting together a preliminary proposal for a group and would appreciate any ideas others have about working with this population, taking into consideration their spirituality as well as their particular concerns related to the body. Thanks!
