Does anyone have any experience/knowledge of working with children with
Achondroplasia?
Here is an email sent to a yoga teacher/friend of mine.
Any imput would be helpful.
Thanks,
Kathy
My husband and I are average statured parents to our
son who has a common form of dwarfism: Achondroplasia.
(It is the same type of dwarfism that the actor, Peter
Dinklage, has. Mr. Dinklage has appeared in films
including "The Station Agent", "Elf", and "Find Me
Guilty".)
I would like to know if you have any recommendations
or information with regard to yoga practice for a
person with dwarfism. He is still very young (five
years old), but I would like my son to feel welcome to
practice yoga safely if he spontaneously shows
interest while watching Mom and Dad. (We know he will,
just as any curious five-year-old would!) This is more
in the interest of encouraging him so that when he is
more mature, he will be more open to practicing. Of
course, if you strongly feel that it is not
appropriate for him, I would greatly appreciate your
honesty and openness in this matter.
Finally, my son has a shunt to drain excess fluid in
the cranium because of hydrocephalus. I mention this
only because prolonged inverted positions are not
recommended by neurologists as this increases
intracranial pressure which may lead to overdrainage
of cerebrospinal fluid -- chronic overdrainage can
lead to complications.
