Dear Matt,
It has taken a while for me to be able to respond to the sudden news of
Casey's passing. [and could not get the myspace link to work!) It is hard for me
to accommodate the idea that someone so full of life and energy could be
gone...it is just not believable.
I have two clear memories of Casey at an adta board of directors
meeting--the only time we met. At that board meeting in New Orleans, she was full of
ideas for how to make the web accessible and truly interactive, current, a true
reflection of our vibez. That potential and creativity she embodied was very
refreshing and exciting.
The second memory is running out of a presentation later at the conference
b/c I had to email myself a report. Casey was sitting in the hall with her
laptop and nonchalantly sent the information for me. I felt so grateful that
someone on our board had that easy relationship with 21century technology, and
that she was so generous with her skill.
I've been told that Computer language is a domain where a person is either a
native user/speaker, or an immigrant user/speaker. As someone in our
generation (post-beat), I am an immigrant speaker of computer-savvy. Casey had a
beautiful fluency that reflected her enthusiasm and connection to the zeitgeist.
Like any good dancer, she modeled that spark and communicated her sense of
the times thru her work with the adta board of directors as newsletter
editor. It was my good fortune to experience her creative spark, however brief.
My condolences to you and your family,
Meg Chang
