In the Footsteps of Pan
... exploring the roots of creativity
...a workshop for personal growth on the island of Tinos, Greece using
dreams, sandplay, movement, music, and the active imagination.
led by Priscilla Rodgers, Dennis McCarthy, Julie Rose and flutist Steve
Gorn
May 25- June4, 2007
Pan... is the most elusive of the Greek gods and perhaps the most
important in light of today’s world situation, where a deeper
connection to the earth and our own creative roots is desperately
needed. Pan is the the unpredictable, the unscheduled, the missing
state of our consciousness. He is life at its deepest. Like the wind
over tall grass or sunlight over water, he is the essence of the
instinctual life, free from imprisoning judgment. It is said that the
sound of his flute brought panic if one resisted it and great joy if
one surrendered to it.
Through dreams, dance, music, sandplay, art and the active imagination
we will anticipate the unexpected and use the myth of Pan,as well as
the other rich myths indigenous to Tinos island, in an improvisational
format.
Each day begins with dream groups, followed by sandplay on the nearby
beach. Each evening we will use a variety of active imagination
techniques to explore and express the instinctual. Afternoons are free
for exploring the lovely and wild island of Tinos.
Tinos is one of the most traditional and untouristed of the Greek
islands, where the mythic roots are still quiet visible. In ancient
times it was the site of a Snake Goddess cult, a healing center to
Poseidon, and the home of Boreas, the wind God. In recent times a
healing icon of the Virgin was unearthed there, attracting thousands
of pilgrims each year.
We will spend a total of three nights in Athens and six on Tinos. On
Tinos we will be staying at the Porto Raphael Hotel, a warm, family run
place set on a bluff overlooking the blue Aegean Sea and serving the
best food in Greece.
This is an opportunity to work with myths in the setting where they
arose.
Cost= $2950. incl. R/T airfare from NYC, all hotel costs w/breakfast
(dbl.occ), all transports in Greece and workshop costs. The cost is

the workshop leaders:
Steve Gorn- whose flute playing is featured in the 2004 Academy Award
winning documentary film “Born into Brothels”, has performed Indian
Classical Music and new American Music on the bansuri bamboo flute,
soprano saxophone and clarinet in concerts and festivals throughout the
world. Well known to audiences in India and the west, he has been
praised by critics and leading Indian musicians as one of the few
westerners recognized to have captured the subtlety and beauty of
Indian music.Inspired by the Sanskrit proverb, “the universe hangs on
sound”, Steve’s teaching explores music as a voice of the soul, a
bridge to the mythic world, and a yoga capable of synchronizing our
realtionship to society and nature. Pan, krishna, the pied piper and
Kokopelli - all are the call of the mythic flute.
