[Adta] Getting the Word Out!

Hello Jody and all,

Thank you for bringing this up. I am fortunate to belong to a congregation where there are 4 dance/movement therapists - out of about 125 households., in addition to several other creative arts therapists. There are probably more of us than there are accountants! Because Julie Leavitt used to co-lead services often and has taught authentic movement classes to many in the congregation, expressive movement and dance is how many of us pray. Because some of the services are lay led, I have had the opportunity to integrate expressive dance and movement as a form of prayer into the services as well.

Not only has this been a wonderful way to introduce the concept of dance/movement therapy to a wider community, including many psychotherapists, it has also been a source for feeding the integration of my body, heart, mind and spirit - which reinforces my self, m y life, and therefore the work that I do.

Here's to continued integration.
Donna

  Hi all,
Although not a conference per se ... I would like to mention that I have just returned from a weekend retreat with members of my temple. It was a retreat designed to explore the many aspects of prayer. I was invited to join as a participant and to weave in some movement experiences ... and so I taught some Israeli folkdance after Friday night services, facilitated some stretching and offered a workshop on incorporating movement into our own personal style of prayer. Regarding the workshop, I had many ideas in mind as I entered this session, but really didn't "know" what I wanted to present until the very moment I began moving with my fellow explorers. In essence what unfolded was a dance/movement "therapy" session. It was a rich and touching session that allowed each of us to connect with ourselves and one another via the movement and the theme of prayer ... the group also spontaneously brought in the upcoming holiday of Tu Bishvat ... the Jewish holiday where we celebrate trees ... and although I never thought I would do this ... I invited us to move like a tree.
As an aside, I would also like to mention that I have begun introducing movement experiences, including movement choirs, into a monthly women's group at this same temple, in honor of the new moon. This too has been a beautiful experience and well received by most.
I just thought that I would share with you all a slightly different way of introducing our work. Although my primary focus during these experiences is on bringing another form of expression to these various services, it feels good to be able to share this part of myself with my fellow temple members as well as to spread the word of dmt.
Anyone else playing with this? I would love to hear how others might be bringing movement and/or dmt into other aspects of their lives ... outside of the work environment.
  Thanks,
  Jody (Wager)

    Hi Robyn & Everyone

I would like to ditto Robyn's message re presenting at national & international conferences as well as opportunities anywhere that place you facing outward in the public eye.

The ACA conference is a wonderful conference & opportunity to present & network & even sending in the proposal is a learning experiences. I have attended this conference & presented there several times & the contacts you can make are invaluable. I'm curious, is anyone presenting there this year? FYI, their proposals for the next year are usually due in early June, so now would be the time to begin to prepare if you are interested.

Also, letting our PR Chair, Christina Devereaux know when & where you are presenting helps ADTA keep track as well as identify your extended interests & ability to network with these groups. This can be helpful in advocacy on many levels.

Also, letting the listserve know, helps us all recognize your efforts & may even encourage others to risk increasing their own efforts in this regard.

When dance therapists present workshops at National Conferences for other organizations, it's a great way to get the word out about dance therapy to a broader audience! Many of us would like to know if our dance therapy colleagues have recently or have plans for the near future to present at a National Conference. For example, the American Counseling Association Convention is coming up soon in Detroit March 21-25 (in 2008 it will be in Hawaii, no less!) -- are you, or do you know if any of your dance therapy colleagues are planning to present in Detroit? Let us know if you are getting the word out to other organizations via conference presentations. ADTA would like to celebrate and support you!
