Hi Indrani,
Congratulations on your entrance into the field. As I'm also completing
my MA and expressive arts programs, I've found that most psychotherapy
clinics (in California anyway) that I've interviewed with that do not
have dance/art therapy programs are generally open to someone new
bringing that experience with them. I would suggest that you mention it
to those interviewing you, and perhaps bring this work afresh to a place
that could use it, maybe by offering to run a weekly group in addition
to your other duties.
Regarding positions with refugees, I have a friend who works with
International Medical Corps, an NGO based in the U.S. that sends
medical workers, including therapists, overseas to work with war-torn
populations. They support their field workers on a stipend and I
believe have placements abroad for durations of 3 months and up. I am
considering working a few months using dance and the expressive arts
with children of war. Their website is www.imcworldwide.org. She's had
a vibrant and diverse experience with this organization.
Best of luck to you! Also, I am visiting Chicago right now if you'd like
to meet up and discuss in person. Please contact me off-list at andrea
at andreaolson dot com if you are interested.
Best,
Andrea Olson
