Hello Everyone!
I will be writing Pat Gardner privately, but I wanted to publicly
acknowledge a bit about the important role she played in the development of
ADTA as well as in the lives of many of us over the years.
It is hard to believe that I have known Pat for probably, over 30 years & as
with so many of us, we grew close like extended family.
She provided the consistency & the link from president to president &
project to project at that time. She was also very patient and supportive
to all of us in leadership positions who struggled to learn the new skills
being required of us.
For example, when I was president of ADTA, I had no typing skills ( I have
since acquired them), so each day, I called Pat & dictated various letters &
often sought her opinions and direction. We had no e mail & no internet so
communication took a lot more effort.
When we worked on the US Senate Hearing on the Aging, Pat didn't even let us
know how ill her husband Nelson was until after the Hearing was over. Nelson
had been our accountant for many years & died soon after the Hearing.
Once, during a terrible snow storm, although the office was closed, Pat
drove into the office to check the messages & to put a special message on
the answering machine so that when people called, they would know that the
office was closed and why.
Pat was always supportive of me and kind and loyal to those she served.
ADTA will miss Pat & I will also.
Susan

Subject: [Adta] IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON ADTA OFFICE
Dear ADTA Members,
Pat Gardner, ADTA Office Manager, retired from her service to ADTA Friday
Feb. 2, 2007. Pat worked for ADTA for around 30 years and was a real
mainstay of the organization. Some might say that over the years she "held
the center" of ADTA, and I believe that the consistency she offered in the
National Office benefitted ADTA over the years. If you attended a conference
in recent history, you encountered Pat at the registration desk with a big
glass of iced tea at her elbow -- most of the time she called you by name or
knew where you lived if you told her your name.
I believe the decision to enter a new phase of life without ADTA was not an
easy one for her to make, and in discussing this with her, she stated that
she wanted no fanfare or tributes "I don't like that type of thing," she
told me.
I do think that Pat might, however, enjoy hearing from some of us. Feel
free to send cards or notes to her at the National Office address. We will
make sure that they are forwarded on to her.
Gloria Farrow remains in the ADTA office ready and willing to assist with
all member business. You can contact Gloria by regular mail, phone, or with
either of these email addresses: info at adta.org or gloria at adta.org.
I know ADTA Members and the Board of Directors wish Pat Gardner a fond
farewell and a big thanks for her years of service!
