[Adta] research

I have attempted to conduct research on the effects of expressive dance on the self-concept of developmentally disabled adults. These are adults who are taking an expressive dance course in a mainstream environment at a local university. But our research was nixed becaused it caused more harm than we expected. The difficulty we came up against was the use of an appropriate tool to measure self-concept that was normed for this population. We also had some trouble with the control group because they did not know and trust the researchers as our dancers did. Also, the participants felt singled out because they were developmentally disabled (a problem they have dealt with all their lives). Also, the tool we found and attempted to use turned out not to be appropriate and some questions were upsetting the participants. We are hoping to begin this research again, but need more specific ideas and ways to measure that will not upset the people we are researching. One idea we
had was to somehow include non-developmentally disabled adults in study in order to answer more questions and to help the disabled adults not feel so singled out. But then that makes the choice of assessment more difficult.

If anyone has suggestions, they would be appreciated.

  Sue
