Hi Folks
I am a registered DTR living in a rural community in BC Canada. I work as a mental health therapist for a community health organization, and my population includes adults, the focus being on short term treatment with a theoretical orientation towards CBT/ DBT practices. All of the clients I see are coming in with a DSM IV diagnosis, AXIS 1, including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, eating disorders etc. Many notably have Axis 2 cluster traits as expressed through the DSM lense of things, many have complex trauma issues also.
As a DTR who works primarily using CBT/ DBT approaches (as is required by the service as approaches must be research/evidence based according to best practices), I slowing find myself hesitant or neglectful of utilizing my training in somatic based work.
I would love to hear from folks who find themselves in a similar predicament.........
How to integrate DBT /CBT medical model traditional approaches, with DMT and still be able to document it in clinical terms and feel confident about this integration when speaking to other clinicians.
The longer I am working in the community health sector the more i am becoming aware of the need to find ways to talk about our work in terms that our understood and compliable with the most current approaches such as CBT and DBT.
Well I am putting it out there as a seed for discussion and as a way to fuel my own interest in how i might contribute somehow in the future to supporting new graduates coming into our field who are looking to get hired and feel confident in talking about our work in a language that is common and understood in community health.
Many thanks in advance
Look forward to hearing from you
Sarah Atkinson
DTR.
