Hi Carolyn!

I don't have much experience writing grants, but I have a few suggestions
for potential funding sources. Several years ago I was working as a DMT in a
counseling program for homeless women thru the YWCA in Portland, Maine and we
discussed these possibilities (although we never had a chance to carry them
thru to fruition.)

1) Target - the big retailer
Consider a corporate program like Target Store Grants; according to their
website, grants are "donated by local Target stores in your community, help
fund family-violence-prevention initiatives, as well as arts and reading
programs, on a local level." I can't remember the level of the funding offered and
if it would be enough to start up a program, but call some of the Target
stores in your area or Check out the Target website at
_http://sites.target.com/site/en/corporate/page.jsp?contentId=PRD03-001816_
(http://sites.target.com/site/en/corporate/page.jsp?contentId=PRD03-001816) for more details.

2) Your local United Way chapter
They may have small grants available or at least point you to other
potential funding agencies

3) Your State Dept of Corrections
In Maine there was a lot of interest by the state to help establish
counseling services for women being released from custody to help them better
transition back into their communities; our focus at the time was more on
individuals but certainly group supports can facilitate similar goals.

4) Your local YWCA
I did a DMT group for at-risk adolescent girls as a private contractor (with
a colleague) and was paid thru the YWCA by a grant they had already secured.
It was actually this contract work that lead to my being hired full-time a
year later :-) See if your local YW offers social services or support
programs and then contact the manager of those programs as a potential first contact.

Best wishes to you and the Oregon group!

Perhaps someone (or many) can help a group of us in Portland, Oregon who are
considering applying for grant money to offer dance-therapy groups to
women's shelters or similar agencies.
