Re: the 13yo writing about anorexia in her emails to a camp counselor
Anorexia is a serious disorder that causes death in at least 1 out of 5
people diagnosed. Many Social Service Departments now address untreated
anorexia in minor children as evidence of neglect. Some children have been
mandated to receive treatment until released by the therapist. I realize
there are lots of possible scenarios here, but the most important thing to
me is that the child is communicating that she has a serious illness. If she
told us she thought she had diabetes, we would suggest she get a medical
evaluation right away. The camp nurse or director needs to contact the
parents and tell them that camp staff members have serious concerns about
their child's health, particularly a possible eating disorder. It should be
clear that this concern is based on communications from the child, not
observations of the child and not statements by others campers.
13 year olds may think that a camp counselor is the same as a school
counselor or licensed counselor. They may not understand that email is
official communication or that their rights to privacy are not guaranteed on
email. These are important life lessons to understand and 13 is a good age
to begin helping them understand how to ask for help when it is needed.
Also, I think the person calling the parents will want to open the
conversation with a statement like, " I know you are caring and concerned
parents and you would want to know about any concerns we have about your
child." I also suggest that the parents be told that this is not the first
time this has happened; other parents have had similar things ocur with
their teens. Also, gently remind them that young teens often begin exploring
their independence, relationships outside of the family, etc. before going
to their parents for help. It would be a good idea to intervene now in a
supportive way rather than a punitive one.
I hope this is helpful.
