Subject: [Adta] Ground Transportation from NYC Area Airports
Hi everyone flying into NYC for the conference!
First: Welcome to Brooklyn! Those of us who have lived here for some time
really love it and we are thrilled to be hosting the conference this year!
There are three major airports you can fly into: JFK, LaGuardia and Newark
Liberty International. Here's the deal when it comes to ground
transportation once you've landed. The first rule is, do your research and
plan ahead. Don't, under any circumstances, accept transportation offers
from solicitors in the airport or help with baggage from anyone other than a
uniformed airport attendant (do I sound like your mom? :-). And don't think
that a cab/taxi is the only way to go. It's the most convenient but the
most expensive, unless you are sharing a ride. Not to mention, sometimes
the taxi stands have looong lines.
LaGuardia (LGA): I think this is the most difficult airport regarding
ground transportation to/from Brooklyn (just my opinion, others can
disagree). Go here for more information:
http://www.laguardiaairport.com/CommutingTravel/airports/html/lg_transportat
ion.html
1. Shared Ride Services - Contact ETS Air
<http://www.etsairshuttle.com> Shuttle (718) 221-5341 or
http://www.etsairshuttle.com/ Click on "shared ride". It will cost $30 from
LaGuardia Airport to Brooklyn and you can book a reservation from their
website. Another company that does shared rides is
http://www.supershuttle.com/. Their website is not as user-friendly (you
need a zip code to get a quote), it costs more ($40) and you can make
reservations at their website. Very viable option.
2. Taxi - At least $45.00. Not recommended at all if you are
traveling during rush hours.
3. Bus to Subway - Go to the LGA website above for more information as
it depends upon which terminal you will be arriving. This is not my
recommendation as it is long, possibly confusing if you don't know the city,
and you'll need $2.00 in coins to get on the bus. Then because you will
probably not have a metrocard, you'll have to pay another $2.00 for the
transfer to get on the subway. Free transfer from bus to subway is
available if you have a metrocard. This is, by far, the cheapest method.
Again - Not recommended by me.
4. Car reservation - You can reserve a car in advance. See the LGA
website above for some phone numbers. You must call in advance of your
arrival. Ask fare price when you call.
JFK: I think #3 is the best option if you are coming into JFK. More
information at:
http://www.kennedyairport.com/CommutingTravel/airports/html/ken_transportati
on.html
1. Shared Ride Services - ETS Air Shuttle and the Super Shuttle (both
above) also do shared rides from JFK. Cost is $30 (ETS) and $125 (Super
Shuttle). See info above.
2. Taxi - At least $35.00.
3. Air Train to Subway - JFK has an AirTrain that connects to many
other transportation methods that will get you to the hotel. This is the
most convenient/quickest: The Air Train travels from all terminals to the
Howard Beach Subway Station, where it connects to the NYC Subway A train.
The A train will take you within walking distance to the Marriott in
Brooklyn. Get off the A train at the Jay Street/Borough Hall Stop. Click
on the above link, then on "trains" for more information. (I highly
recommend this option.)
4. Car reservation - See website above for phone numbers. You must
call in advance of your arrival. Ask fare price when you call.
Newark Liberty International (EWR): Tons of ground transportation to
Manhattan's subways. More information at
http://www.newarkairport.com/CommutingTravel/airports/html/ewr_transportatio
n.html
1. Shared Ride Services - ETS above $45.00. Make a reservation
on-line.
2. Buses - Take the Newark Liberty Airport Express bus to 42nd and 8th
Avenue (Port Authority). Then take the A train subway from Port Authority
to Jay Street/Borough Hall. Marriott is within walking distance. Go to
http://www.coachusa.com/olympia/ for more info on the bus from EWR Airport
to Port Authority. Check the cost and times it leaves.
3. Air Train - EWR also has an Air Train, like JFK, however it is not
as convenient to get to a subway from EWR's Air Train. Take AirTrain to
Newark Liberty International Airport Train Station. At Newark Liberty
International Airport Train Station, take a NJ TRANSIT
<http://www.njtransit.com/> R or Amtrak <http://www.amtrak.com/> R train to
New York Penn Station. At New York Penn Station, take the A train subway to
Jay Street/Borough Hall. Marriott is walking distance.
4. Taxi - You'll have to pay tolls. Not recommended. At least $60.00,
unsure if that includes tolls.
5. Car reservation - see website for phone numbers. Call in advance.
Ask fare price. Not recommended as you'll have tolls to pay as well as the
fare.
I have taken the Air Train to Newark Liberty and while it's a few switches
of trains, it's ok. But I didn't have luggage. I've also done #1 above
with luggage and after a transatlantic flight, and it was very easy.
Other notes: There are many other subway lines that will get you to within
walking distance of the Marriott. There is a major subway station at
Borough Hall (a different stop from the A train at Jay Street/Borough Hall)
where the 2, 3, 4, 5, N, R can be found. If you haven't discovered
http://www.hopstop.com <http://www.hopstop.com/> yet, go there! It's
wonderful! It will help you get to wherever from wherever in NYC, among
other cities. For a subway map, go to
http://www.mta.info/nyct/maps/submap.htm
I hope this helps. And again, welcome to Brooklyn!!
