Regarding references for students: I certainly believe we should teach them
to fish. After all, it's a skill we use for our entire careers. However, I
think that for practitioners and students, the data base is hard to access.
Alternate route students usually do not have access to a library database.
and when they do, often have to pay for articles because most libraries do
not carry hard copy of the DMT and CAT journals. When you do have access to
the database, it's difficult to find the publications within the Boolian
system. The Marian Chace Foundation does provide a complete listing; then
these publications have to be ordered through a library or borrowed. For
those without a college or university account, this can be quite
time-consuming. However, I do think that because we have the tradition of
making things available through "free" libraries in the US, consumers aren't
used to paying for the service provided by a web host or paying royalties to
the authors. The royalty issue is a personal conflict for me sometimes,
because I do not have a university position, and therefore, I am not getting
paid to do research and to write. The things I produce are either voluntary
contributions to the profession or are produced in the spirit of
entrepeneurship, with the hope that I am providing a product that others
will find useful enough to pay for.
Regardless, I think students sometimes use the list as a resources first,
before looking on their own, and that is frustrating. I like that we are
collaborating to create a comprehensive reference list for the association;
then perhaps students can help us add to that list each year, as they become
more skilled and investigate topics.
