[Adta] doing the fishing for students

Dear colleagues,
Regarding providing literature references for "students" - a couple of points and some info about "policies" or practices of the ADTA.
1. Access to the literature of our profession is important to all ADTA members, not just students. Our efforts to make the literature more available are aimed at members across the professional lifespan.
2. Members have different levels of access to resources like electronic databases and interlibrary loan. Students are actually the most fortunate, as they have access to these things through their schools, and yes, it is good for them to go back to their libraries and computers and get these things themselves.
3. The Research Subcommittee, has over the years made efforts to educate the membership, both grad students and practicing clinicians to access the literature themselves. (See the Research Resources webpages on our website.) It is really the best way for any individual to get information they need - through electronic databases like Psycinfo or ERIC. The graduate programs have made tremendous strides in educating their students on how to access the literature. Sometimes after students do a search of the literature, they may still ask the membership at large through the listserv if anyone knows of additional references on their topic. But that should by no means be their only means of gathering literature.
And again, it is sometimes the more long time members who have a greater need in this area.
4. I think we need to take a multi-pronged approach to getting information/literature/research about DMT to people needing it for support getting jobs, for improving their clinical practice, and for doing research. So yes, we (all of us!) help create a pond, we provide access to it and we teach the members to fish!

Hi Sandra!
I think that we DO have a responsibility to provide the "pond" from witch
the students can "fish" for specific info that they may need. Also, in a
sense we are all "students" of life" in various stages, & I find it helpful
to know where to go to get what I need also.
When I was a student, before ADTA & academic programs, there were only
"hints" virtually no, or few papers had been written on the general subject
of d/mt. it is amazing how far we've come. Few people have the opportunity
to develop & support the development of an actual body of knowledge for a
profession & we "do" & have" & I hope will continue to.

Dear Adta,
It is so nice that everyone seems to feel welcome to ask the ADTA to
provide references for students. Something I like to encourage
students to do for themselves.
Do we have a policy on this?
We can either hand fish to the hungry, or teach them to fish for
themselves..is our goal to teach the students to hunt for themselves?
Sandra
