Greetings from the Department of Somatic Counseling Psychology:
The Department of Somatic Counseling Psychology at Naropa University in
Boulder, Colorado is pleased to announce the following adjunct faculty
teaching positions for the upcoming 2007-2008 academic year. Please be sure
to read all pertinent information below before responding
If you are interested in applying for any of thee positions please submit a
cover letter and resume to me at rkennedy at naropa.edu. In your cover letter
please indicate the following:
1. The course(s) for which you are interested in teaching
2. Your understanding of the Adjunct Faculty Requirements as outlined below
and your willingness to abide by them
3. When you might be available for an interview.
Interviews will be with the Somatic Counseling Psychology Leadership Team,
they will be about an hour in length, and they will be held on the Paramita
Campus of Naropa University in Boulder, CO - though in some cases a phone
interview may be possible. During the interview we will ask you fairly
standard interview questions and will invite you to provide a 10 to 15
minute teaching demonstration on one of the topics within the subject area
you will be teaching.

ADJUNCT POSITIONS AVAILABLE:
* PSYS 607: Appraisal: Clinical Assessment (3.0 Credits; Spring Semester
2008; 2nd Year Students)
> * Course Description: Student clinicians are provided a working knowledge of
> the skills and tools used in the clinical process of assessing, diagnosing,
> and treating psychiatric syndromes and populations. The course content
> explores the basic aspects of psychometric testing including validity,
> reliability, and professional and ethical considerations associated with
> assessment and testing. In addition, students are introduced to the major
> diagnostic categories within the DSM-IV-TR as a tool for understanding states
> of individual psychopathology.
> * Faculty Requirements: Master¹s degree (doctorate preferred) in counseling,
> psychology, social work, human services, nursing, or other related field;
> Licensure preferred; Two years previous teaching experience at the graduate
> level; Proficiency in APA format; Facility with psychometric assessment and
> psychiatric diagnosing. (NOTE: This is one of the eight licensure track
> cognate areas.)
* PSYS 700: Research and Statistics (3.0 Credits; Spring Semester 2008; 2nd
Year Students)
> * Course Description: This course surveys research methods and statistics as
> they apply to counseling psychology, psychotherapy, dance/movement therapy and
> body psychotherapy. Topics include philosophical issues, rigor, types of
> psychological research, descriptive and inferential statistics, experimental
> and correlational methods, qualitative methods, test construction and
> interpretation, program evaluation, research ethics, and strategies for
> literature searches. The course seeks to be applicable and useful for both
> professional and personal growth and includes lecture, discussion, and
> practice exercises.
> * Faculty Requirements: Master¹s degree (doctorate preferred) in counseling,
> psychology, social work, human services, nursing, or other related field;
> Licensure preferred; Two years previous teaching experience at the graduate
> level; Proficiency in APA format; Strong background in quantitative and
> qualitative research methodologies; moderate proficiency in descriptive and
> inferential statistics. (NOTE: This is one of the eight licensure track

* PSYS 736: Current Methods and Skills in Psychotherapy (2.0 Credits of 3.0
Credits; Fall 2007; 2nd Year Students)
> * Course Description: Major current approaches in psychotherapy theory and
> practice including Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Dialectic Behavior
> Therapy (DBT), and Solution Focused Therapy are explored. Students have the
> opportunity to examine how each of these methods operates independently and
> also how they interface with more traditional approaches. Students also begin
> to work with these approaches in a way that builds clinical skill development
> in alignment with a somatic psychotherapy orientation.
> * Faculty Requirements: Master¹s degree (doctorate preferred) in counseling,
> psychology, social work, human services, nursing, or other related field;
> Licensure preferred; Two years previous teaching experience at the graduate
> level; Proficiency in APA format; Strong background in the historical
> theoretical orientations in counseling and psychology and an understanding of
> how these apply to current trends in the field. (NOTE: This is one of the
> eight licensure track cognate areas.)
* PSYS 856: Professional Orientation (3.0 Credits; Fall 2007; 3rd Year
Students)
> * Course Description: A concluding seminar to help prepare the student for
> what to expect after graduation, the course focuses on ethical and legal
> issues, relationships to professional organizations, and employment realities.
> Students develop awareness and skills in ethical decision making through
> review of professional and ethical codes, relevant legal statutes, and case
> scenarios. Students also prepare written theoretical frameworks and resumés
> and do mock interviews to assist them with postgraduate employment and
> professional communication. American Dance Therapy Association registry and
> general licensure issues are also discussed.
> * Faculty Requirements: Master¹s degree (doctorate preferred) in counseling,
> psychology, social work, human services, nursing, or other related field;
> Licensure preferred; Two years previous teaching experience at the graduate
> level; Proficiency in APA format; Strong background in ethical, legal, and
> professional practice issues in the field of counseling and psychology. (NOTE:
> This is one of the eight licensure track cognate areas.)
ADJUNCT FACULTY REQUIREMENTS:
Before contacting us about scheduling an interview, please reaffirm your
ability to commit to the following requirements that are related to these
faculty positions:
* Adjunct Faculty pay rates are determined by the number of credits an
instructor has taught at Naropa University. They are typically between $600
and $800 per credit hour.
* Adjunct Faculty are required to have at least two years of teaching
experience at the university level.
* Adjunct Faculty are required to have a master¹s degree in psychology,
counseling, or a related field; a doctoral degree is preferred.
* Adjunct Faculty are required to be licensed, certified, or registered
within their discipline. In some cases an applicant may be considered if she
or he is actively working toward these credentials.
* Adjunct Faculty are required to teach within their scope of expertise and
to understand and adhere to academic and professional codes of ethics in the
delivery of their course content.
* Adjunct Faculty are required to have proficiency in APA format;
* Adjunct Faculty are required to attend an all-faculty meeting within our
department once per semester and a community meeting including students once
per semester during the semester in which they are teaching.
* Adjunct Faculty are required to meet with their respective Department
Director/Co-Chair (i.e. Dance/Movement Therapy or Body Psychotherapy
Programs) at least once per semester during the semester in which they are
teaching.
* Adjunct Faculty are required to communicate with the Department Co-Chairs
in the creation and delivery of course content. This is to ensure that the
course content meets requirements for state licensing.
* Adjunct Faculty are required to communicate with the Department Co-Chair
and the Program Directors regarding individual students who may be having
difficulties in classes (either personal or academic).
* Adjunct Faculty teaching core courses are required at the end of the
semester to assess the effectiveness of achieving the course objectives they
included on their syllabi at the beginning of each semester.
* Adjunct Faculty are invited to communicate with the Adjunct Partner
regularly (This is another adjunct faculty who works closely with University
administration to represent the needs of adjuncts).
