Creative Dance for Adults Workshop in Tucson, AZ
presented by Mettler Studios,
taught by Mary Ann Brehm, Ph.D. and Griff Goehring, M.A.
January 7- 18, 2008
Tuition: Two weeks- $450 One week- $300
Schedule- Mon-Fri 9:30 -4:30 with a break for lunch
PURPOSE
· To practice dance as a universal language
· To cultivate the natural expressive movement resources of
individuals and groups
· To develop skill in the use of the body as an instrument and
movement as the material of dance
· To provide current and future teachers and therapistswith materials
and methods for teaching creative dance and improvisation on all levels
WORKSHOP MATERIAL
· Structured improvisations for individuals and groups and directed
exercises
· Experiences in the art of body movement, according to principles
developed by dance pioneer Barbara Mettler. These include:
Using the kinesthetic sense as a guide for creating movement
Exploring force, time, and space and their connections to drama, music, and
visual arts
Discovering organic form, where movements and themes evolve naturally one
from another
Unifying sound and movement
Cultivating skills for group work
THE INSTRUCTORS
Mary Ann Brehm, Ph.D. (Dance, University of Wisconsin-Madison) and Griff
Goehring, M.A. (Dance Therapy, Anitoch) have taught and performed creative dance
since the 1970s. Griff and Mary Ann were members of Barbara Mettler’s
professional companies at different times and both were assistants to Mettler.
Mary Ann is co-author of Creative Dance for Learning: The Kinesthetic Link.
She has taught at the Tucson Creative Dance Center since 1990 and is
adjunct faculty with Lesley University. Griff founded Green Mountain Creative
Dance Center in Vermont and is adjunct faculty at Hampshire College.
