Hi all,
NYCCAT has been involved with Career Transitions for Dancers since last
year. They had a panel on interesting professions and we had speakers from
all of the creative arts therapies there speaking about the work.

Hello all.
This sounds like a great organization and its wonderful to hear an
"insiders" perspective on the services that they offer. In addition to
"educating" the CTFD about the possibility of DMT as a career... doesn't
this seem like the PEFECT place for a support group to be DMT based? It
seems to me that it would illogical NOT to have at least one of the support
systems be movement based. I gather this organization is just based in NYC
and LA ? We have a strong presence of DMTs in both these cities. Seems like
a great opportunity to educate AND provide movment based services...
Do others agree?

Hi All,
This is my first time posting -- I have been considering studying
Dance/Movement Therapy and it has been very illuminating to read about the
various topics that come up.
I have been a client of Career Transition for Dancers in NYC for about three
years, and I have received tremendous support through the services they
offer. This is an amazing organization that I had heard about early in my
dance training in Ohio, but I've discovered that many in the professional
dance community still are unaware of them.
After 12+ years as a professional modern dancer, and dance instructor in
many settings, I started to feel the need for a different kind of life.
After many months of feeling isolated, afraid, and somewhat ashamed of my
waning love for the dancer life, I started going to CTFD for one-on-one
career counseling and the monthly "Dancers Managing Change" support group.
I felt saved! Being a dancer is such an important identity thing -- how
fitting that there be an organization that is devoted to helping dancers
navigate their paths to non-performing careers.
There are basic requirements one must meet in order to become a client
(check their web site for the details), but once you are a member, you can
receive their services free, for life. I have utilized the library of
career-search and higher-education materials and attended the "Career
Conversations" as well -- in which a panel of people in various fields
(topics vary) discuss their experiences and answer questions. There are
also networking opportunities, a business group, a dancers over 40 group,
and more. CTFD is commited to assisting dancers in the search for other
careers but also very, very dedicated to attending to the emotional aspects
of transition.
Clients can also partake of services at the Actor's Work Program, and it was
at one of their panel discussions that I met an Expressive Arts Therapist.
Clients do not have to live in New York; there is also an office in LA, and
people all over the country can join, and make use of the 800# to speak to a
career counselor.
I do not work for CTFD and am not an official representative, but I am more
than happy to pass along any information to them from ADTA, or put anyone in
touch with the director of CTFD if that is desired. I am acquainted with
many of the staff and have been a familiar face in their offices and at the
events for the last three years. Anyone can please feel free to contact me
directly if I can be of any assistance. It may be possible to give them
some marketing materials about ADTA -- flyers, a poster -- to be posted with
their career information materials.
Thank you,

Hi Donna
This sounds like a very important contact & I'm glad you were responsive to
them. Please let us know what you learn about this group as well as
experience. It sounds like they may also need some follow-up
materials/contacts from ADTA.

Is anyone familiar with this organization?
I am cutting and pasting the e-mail I received through the Dance Action
Network in Boston area. I e-mailed to ask them if they know about dance
therapy. The response I got is below this one.
Dear Greater Boston Area Dance Supporters,
I am writing to inform you that Career Transition For Dancers (CTFD) is
coming to Boston September 23 – 24, 2007 to introduce its programs and
services.
As you may know, all performing careers must come to an end and many dancers
are faced with the harsh reality of trying to find an equally fulfilling
passion, as well as a new source of income. CTFD is here to help dancers
prepare for a future beyond the stage and assists dancers in discovering
ways of supplementing their current artistic endeavors.
Through free one-on-one career counseling, educational scholarships and
entrepreneurial grants, CTFD helps dancers discover new fulfilling
employment options, in preparation for that stressful and inevitable time
when dancers must take their final bow. CTFD encourages dancers to start
preparing early, while still performing and even when they are still
students, in order to avoid a crisis situation down the road.
We hope you will spread the word to all current and former professional
dancers and choreographers to join us on Sunday - September 23rd at Boston
Ballet - 19 Clarendon Street - 5th Floor, Board Room.
Sign-in is at 10:30 AM and Orientation is from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
One-on-One Career Counseling is to follow.
Space is limited so interested participants need to RSVP to Dana McCaw:
212.764.0172 or dmccaw at careertransition.org to reserve a space for
Orientation and a Career Counseling time slot.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We also hope that you will help us spread the word to all
professionally-bound, high school age dance students to join us for an
orientation, presented during Boston Ballet School's "Career Night... A
Dancer's Next Step," on Monday, September 24th at 7:00 PM in Studio 7.
For the Student Session, RSVP to Marissa Krolewski at Boston Ballet School:
mkrolewski at bostonballet.com.
There are attached flyers for further information on these programs .
You may visit www.careertransition.org for more information on CTFD's
programs and services.
Please do not let the Boston area dancers miss out on this opportunity!
